did i say you can call me Debbie?

on April 2, 2013

First of all, I’m sorry it’s been so long since I’ve updated. I’ve been super duper busy. I’ll have a much better post later on this week.

So, we all know my name is Debora. If you didn’t know that by now….Hi, my name is Debora, it’s a pleasure to meet you.

Now, I know with certain names there are standard nicknames. Obviously…the standard nicknames for my name are Debbie and Deb.

Let’s get something straight: I HATE being called Debbie. I don’t mind calling other people Debbie or hearing other people call somebody Debbie. I just can’t stand it when somebody calls me Debbie. Deb is usually my nickname of choice or Dabbs.

There’s probably a total of 3 people who are “allowed” to call me Debbie and they’re people I grew up with in my neighborhood.

There are a couple of reasons why I don’t like it. One of which is way too personal to write about on here and the other is because it makes me feel like a 50-year-old cat lady. (To the other Debbie’s: please don’t be offended by that. It’s only when it’s directed towards me).

There’s this Italian dude (as in…he lives in Italy) that keeps hitting me up on OkC. He’s weird and I’ve been trying to shake him off. This weekend…he sends me a message calling me Debbie.

This made me think, is it even appropriate to call somebody as a nickname when you don’t even know them? When is it appropriate?

  1. I think I may have called you Dee in a comment once. Now I feel bad.

I’ve noticed that people break out the nicknames pretty quickly, at least our in the western part of the US. It happens to me all the time. I always introduce myself with my full name and get called a specific nickname probably 75-80% of the time. I don’t mind it, I just find it interesting.

i also find it interesting! I mean I usually get Deb pretty quickly which is totally fine but it’s when somebody calls me Debbie that irks me. I know my reaction is totally uncalled for but whatever LOL

  3. Dar says:

You know, you’ve never struck me as a ‘Debbie’, always a Deb or a Debora, lol… That guy in Italy sounds really weird!

I kinda switch back and forth between introducing myself as D’Arave or Dar, depending on the situation, cuz D’Arave is just such a pain in the ass name, lol!

    • dsantos85 says:

I’ve never really seen myself as a Debbie either! haha…so i’m glad we can agree on that. I like calling you Dar only because I feel D’Arave is too complicated for my brain sometimes LOL. But I love the name because it’s so awesome and different.

  4. I always ask someone. I use their formal name and say, “Do you go by James or do you prefer JImmy?” My name has no nickname so I can’t relate but I have been called a lot worse than Debbie 🙂

  5. Chin Up, Chest High! says:

Absolutely NOT defending him for getting your name wrong but over here in Europe I would say most Deborahs go by Debbie. I’ve rarely met one who prefers the longer version. That’s probably why he made that assumption about you.

    A possible explanation anyway 🙂

    • dsantos85 says:

hahaha…no, i totally understand that. I guess my point was more so the fact of do you just automatically call somebody a nickname without even asking their permission?!

I mean, I know I’m partially at fault because I get weirdly offended LOL and I know that isn’t normal

  6. Debieah says:

This is hilarious; my name is Deborah, but don’t you dare call me “Deb!” My family (without my permission) decided I’d be “Debbie Anne.” My mother is Debbie so in an act of rebellion in 9th grade I switched the way I spelt it to Debi, and I’ve just slowly lost Anne. Anyhow, I HATE being called Deb. I don’t mind the name, and some good friends can call me that, but I usually just feel patronized when someone calls me “Deb.” By the way, I’m 29, and I’m a dog person. 😉

    • dsantos85 says:

haha…i love your btw. I know Debbie’s aren’t old cat ladies, I just feel that’s what it sounds like when I’m addressed as Debbie but not others.

Funny how it works differently for us 😀

      Thanks for reading!
